LONDON, JUNE 27 - Chalky's Bite, brewed by Sharp's Brewery in conjunction with world-renowned restaurateur Rick Stein, walked away with the winners trophy in the Beer category at the Quality Drink Awards at Vinopolis, London on 27 June
Chalky's Bite, launched in 2006 and named after Rick Stein's terrier Chalky, was developed by Sharp's Head Brewer, Stuart Howe in association with Rick Stein. The aim was to create a beer that was the perfect partner for sea food. The brief included that the beer was to be made from locally-sourced ingredients and be of the very finest quality. After several months of development work Chalky's Bite was born.
The beer is brewed from Cornish Maris Otter malt, Saaz and Bobek hops and pure Cornish water. It is then matured at 0 degrees centigrade for 2 months on fresh hops before being spiced with ground wild fennel seeds and bottled with a charge of fresh Belgian yeast. Bottles are then warm and cold conditioned for 2 months before sale.
The results of the Quality Drink Awards proved that the budget supermarkets are producing genuine quality products with both Lidl and Aldi scooping awards. Aldi won the Non-vintage Champagne category with their Champagne Carlin Cru (£13.99) and Lidl won the Liqueurs & Speciality Spirits category with their Queen Margot Cream Liqueur (£4.99) along with the award for Rose Wines up to £5.99 with their Viajero Central Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Rose.
